Using patient records of Kaiser Permanente members from California and Mid-Atlantic regions, a team of researchers found that HIV is an independent risk factor for heart failure, according to a new study presented at the International AIDS Conference, July 23-27, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The lead author is Dr. Alan Go, Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Division of Research, who presented this at the conference.

The study was co-authored by Suma Vupputuri, PhD, a research scientist at the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Research Institute (MAPRI), and Michael Horberg, MD, executive director of MAPRI. Dr. Vupputuri and Dr. Horberg were assisted in the effort by MAPRI analyst Haihong Hu, and chart abstractors/clinical research team members Lauren Williamson and Venus Alert. An abstract of the research can be found here, and press coverage of the study can be found here.
