Our chairman and CEO has been named to Time Magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Time magazine named Kaiser Permanente Chairman and CEO Bernard J. Tyson to the 2017 TIME 100, its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

The TIME 100 list, now in its 14th year, recognizes the world’s most influential individuals, in one of five categories: pioneers, artists, leaders, titans and icons.

Tyson is recognized for his “highly respected voice” to make high-quality health care affordable and for his leadership bringing attention to mental health and wellness.”

“I am humbled to be included among so many extraordinary individuals,” Tyson said. “I see this as encouragement to continue to advance the principles Kaiser Permanente was founded on more than 70 years ago – that high-quality health care should be accessible and affordable to everyone. This recognition speaks to the hard work and dedication of our 22,600 Permanente Medical Group physicians and our 200,000 employees, including our 54,000 wonderful nurses.”

Time asks well-known figures to write the tributes for its list of influential people. Tyson’s tribute is written by respected civil rights leader, Congressman John Lewis, who writes:

“During his tenure, Bernard has focused on public health and preventive care, rather than just treating disease, seeking to provide high-quality, affordable, accessible health care to all of (Kaiser Permanente’s) members.”

In her introduction of this year’s list, Time Editor-in-Chief Nancy Gibbs, notes that, “Every year new themes emerge. This year, I am struck by how many people on the list — from Kaiser Permanente CEO Bernard J. Tyson to singer Demi Lovato to Broadway star Ben Platt — have made mental health a special focus of their work.”

Gibbs has said of the list in the past: “Each year our TIME 100 list lets us step back and measure the forces that move us …. One way or another they each embody a breakthrough: they broke the rules, broke the record, broke the silence, broke the boundaries, to reveal what we’re capable of.”
