Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic’s commercial health plan has once again been recognized as the highest-rated plan in the region and among the highest in the country for providing expert, coordinated care and outstanding service.
Kaiser Permanente’s commercial health plan in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC received 5 out of 5 stars from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) 2024 Health Plan Ratings. This marks the sixth consecutive year that Kaiser Permanente’s commercial health plan has achieved the highest quality rating possible, making it the only health plan in the nation to hold this record. For the second year in a row, Kaiser Permanente’s commercial plan is the only plan in Maryland, Virginia or Washington, DC to receive the top quality rating of 5 out of 5 stars on the NCQA’s Health Plan Report Cards.
Out of more than 2,000 health plans nationwide, only five received the prestigious 5 out of 5-star rating, placing them in the top 0.3% of health systems in the country —Kaiser Permanente’s Mid-Atlantic commercial health plan is proud to be among them.
NCQA also rates Kaiser Permanente’s Mid-Atlantic Medicaid and Medicare plans among the best in the region for overall treatment, prevention, equity, and patient experience. Kaiser Permanente’s Mid-Atlantic region received 4.5 out of 5 stars for its Medicaid (available in Maryland) and Medicare plans (available in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC), the highest number of stars awarded to any Medicaid or Medicare plan in the region.
Achieving the highest ratings means that Kaiser Permanente members consistently benefit from outstanding care. Consumers can compare health plans on the NCQA website at https://reportcards.ncqa.org/.
“Our NCQA rating is a reflection of the dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence by our entire team. It underscores our commitment to delivering high-quality care and ensuring the best outcomes for our patients,” said Israel Rocha Jr., regional president for Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic. “This achievement is not just a benchmark but a testament to our unwavering focus on continuous improvement and patient-centered care.”
Kaiser Permanente provides care at 35 medical centers located in Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia, as well as through virtual options including video, phone, and secure messaging. This integrated and coordinated approach to convenient care ensures that Kaiser Permanente members experience better health outcomes. With regular preventive screenings, cutting-edge treatments, and the effective management of chronic conditions, Kaiser Permanente has helped its members live longer, healthier lives. Data shows that Kaiser Permanente members in the Mid-Atlantic region live, on average, 6 years longer than the national average.
For example, Kaiser Permanente makes it simple and accessible for patients to manage their heart health. At Kaiser Permanente, every visit is a blood pressure visit. Whether a patient is seeing a primary care doctor, specialist, urgent care provider, or even an optometrist, their blood pressure is measured and recorded. If blood pressure readings are too high, the primary care doctor is alerted and can take immediate action. Patients with heart-related issues can also be monitored remotely using high-tech portable devices that continuously send data and alerts to the medical team, ensuring proactive care. This integrated and coordinated approach has significantly reduced the incidence of heart attacks and strokes among members, with outcomes that consistently outperform national benchmarks.
With 1,800 physicians in more than 60 specialties, the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, which provides care exclusively to Kaiser Permanente members, is the largest integrated multispecialty medical group in the region.
“Our top priority as Permanente physicians is providing our patients with best-in-class care. At Kaiser Permanente, we lead the nation in preventing and treating disease. We do that by hiring the best physicians in the country and giving them tools to create the best outcomes for patients. We also focus on methodical screening to identify disease early. Earning a 5-star rating from NCQA for six consecutive years reflects our doctor’s long-standing commitment to medical excellence so our patients live longer and healthier lives,” said Dr. Richard McCarthy, executive medical director, Kaiser Permanente. “Whether it’s through early detection of cancers, controlling blood pressure, managing diabetes or world class integration of medical and surgical specialists to provide the best outcomes we are consistently delivering superior care that results in better health for our patients at Kaiser Permanente. This level of excellence translates directly into more years of life for the communities we serve.”
“Our physicians and staff are dedicated to preventing, diagnosing, and treating illness,” said Dr. Joseph Territo, associate medical director for Quality, Kaiser Permanente and the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group. “Our 5-star rating, year after year, from NCQA underscores our relentless focus on quality and our ability to deliver care that makes a measurable difference in our patients’ lives. Our consistently stellar results demonstrate that this is how we care for patients consistently, every day, now and in the future. We are honored to lead the nation in health outcomes, and we will continue to raise the bar for medical excellence.”
NCQA is a national, private, not-for-profit organization that evaluates health plans based on dozens of quality measures, including clinical performance, patient experience, prevention, equity, and treatment.
NCQA primarily used the 2023 Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®) to establish its 2024 ratings. HEDIS is the most widely used performance measurement tool in health care.
The ratings and methodology are posted on the NCQA’s website at https://www.ncqa.org.
