For the first time, Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States employees will recognize one of their own as they honor nurses receiving Kaiser Permanente’s National Nursing Extraordinary Nurse Award.
Ann Jordan, MSN, RNC, and Regional Program Manager for Women’s Health, has been selected by the Kaiser Permanente National Nurse Leadership Selection Committee to be one of the Extraordinary Nurse Award recipients for 2015. She joins a select group of nurses honored for embodying all six of the Kaiser Permanente nursing values: professionalism, patient and family centric, compassion, teamwork, excellence, and integrity.
“Ann is a consummate professional and subject matter expert regarding all topics related to women’s health,” said Shannon Hines, who nominated Ann for the award. “As the women’s health field continues to expand, she stays abreast of changes and issues by attending and designing continuing education programs.”
Ann says she is humbled and honored to receive this award. She says her passion throughout her nursing career has been women’s health.
Ann has personally worked with mothers to design care plans that meet their needs, respect their cultures, goals, and aspirations, and are inclusive of their families. In 2012, she led a project to provide breast pumps for mothers whose babies were in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit so that they could provide the best nutrition possible for their tiny infants.
As a continuous learner, Ann looks for ways to increase her knowledge and skill set. In 2013 she completed the Kaiser Permanente Improvement Institute’s Improvement Advisor program and continually uses those skills to help achieve the highest quality results for women’s health programs. She is frequently engaged as a subject matter expert on a multitude of women’s health nursing issues. Most recently, her expertise has been sought to launch the comprehensive perinatal program for the Mid-Atlantic region. She is well respected by both the physician chiefs of service and Health Plan directors and is seen as a leader in the professional practice.
Ann understands that patient-centered care is essential and has advocated for the region to adopt patient- and family-centered care practices that can drive a foundation for safe, effective, efficient, timely, and equitable care.
Ann’s compassion for victims of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and focus on healthy relationships led her to co-chair the IPV Committee for t Mid-Atlantic region. She works tirelessly to educate providers about the importance of efficiently and effectively screening all women for IPV.
Prior to the Affordable Care Act requirements, Ann was involved in promoting IPV prevention and support for survivors. Ann also spearheads the annual Domestic Violence Awareness month activities for the Mid-Atlantic region, partnering with Verizon and collecting hundreds of cell phones for women who need a safe way to contact family or police in an emergency.
She also serves as co-chair of the Mid-Atlantic region’s KP WELL Employee Resource Group, leading activities such as self-defense workshops and Dress for Success –a professional clothing drive for women re-entering the workforce.
In addition to Ann’s work at Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States, she is committed to serving her community. She is a valued member of many community organizations, including the Family Justice Center Foundation, the Maryland Network against Domestic Violence and the Maryland Health Care Coalition Against Domestic Violence. She has been an active member of the Montgomery County Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) Board for 12 years and co-chairs the FIMR’s Community Action Team.
Ann and other recipients of the National Nursing Extraordinary Nurse Award were formally recognized at a luncheon March 8 during the National Nurse Leadership Committee meeting in California.
