For the second straight year, Kaiser Permanente earned a top-ranking score of 100 on the 2018 Disability Equality Index and was named a Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion.
The DEI is administered by two of the leading U.S. disability organizations — the American Association of People With Disabilities and the U.S. Business Leadership Network — to advance the inclusion of people with disabilities. The DEI assessment measures an organization’s culture and leadership, accessibility, employment practices, community engagement, and supplier diversity.
2018 Disability Equality Index Best Place to Worf for Disability Inclusion logo“At Kaiser Permanente, fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace — where every person is recognized for his or her unique abilities — is core to who we are,” said Ronald L. Copeland, MD, Chief Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity Officer. “When Henry J. Kaiser hired men with disabilities at his seven wartime Kaiser shipyards to fill openings created by the war effort, Kaiser challenged widely held beliefs about disabled workers. As a result, he helped teach our nation a very important lesson about believing in people’s abilities, rather than rejecting them because of their disabilities.”
Michael Siver, president of KPability, Kaiser Permanente’s business resource group for employees with disabilities and their advocates, said, “I believe that Kaiser Permanente is committed to providing all employees with the tools and resources to help them thrive in the workplace. Our workplace accommodation process is a great example of this commitment. For me, being allowed to determine when I need an accommodation and immediately submit a request, without first having to ask my manager for approval, makes me feel respected and valued.”
