Kaiser Permanente celebrates African-American History Month every February, and this year, several events are planned in honor of this important recognition. The KP African-American Professional Association (KPAAPA) is hosting two events focused on breaking stigmas around mental health and wellness in African-American communities. In addition, the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s Sweet Home Café, which is title-sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, is featuring special menus and “Chef’s Stations” for the next two Fridays. Mind, Body, Soul Health Fair – Monday, February 26, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Join us on Monday, February 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Regional Office Henry Kaiser and Sidney Garfield training rooms on 2E for the KPAAPA Mind, Body, Soul Health Fair, addressing the past, present, and future health needs of the African-American community. The fair will feature a wellness booth, BMI and blood pressure screenings, flu shots, giveaways, and more. Light refreshments will be served.
A Conversation on Mental Health & Wellness Webinar – Tuesday, February 27, 2-4 p.m.
KPAAPA chapters across the organization are coming together to host “A Conversation on Mental Health & Wellness” webinar on Tuesday, February 27, from 2-4 p.m. EST. The webinar will feature speakers focusing on addressing the stigma, myths, and stereotypes of mental health in the African-American communities. Dr. Anita Mwalui, president of Community Health Education and Research Corporation, part of the Mental Health Association of Greater Washington, will be a featured speaker from our region.
Chef’s Station – Friday, February 16 and Friday, February 23, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
As you may know, Kaiser Permanente is a founding donor and grand-opening sponsor of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. KP also sponsors the museum’s Sweet Home Café, which is featuring special menus for the month of February inspired by African-American chefs seen in the museum’s 4th floor Foodways exhibition, in addition to a “Chef’s Station” on Friday, February 16 and Friday, February 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. where guest chefs will share their passion for food and answer questions about your favorite recipes. Friday, February 16 will feature Chef Aaron Andrews, Corporate Chef; and Chef Robert Rivera, Director of Joint Ventures for Thompson Hospitality. Friday, February 23 will feature Chef Rodney Frazer and Chef Susan Frankson of the Brownsville Community Culinary Center. For more information, visit the café’s website here.
