2024 Community Health Snapshot

0

In 2024, Kaiser Permanente, Mid-Atlantic States, invested more than $343 million in community health initiatives to improve the communities we serve.

Throughout 2024, we prioritized initiatives that broadened access to care, deepened community outreach, and advanced efforts to support long-term health. We collaborated with schools to promote the well-being of both students and staff. We funded programs that help individuals meet essential needs like housing and nutritious food. We also invested in community safety by addressing the underlying causes of instability. Through local convenings, we brought together leaders to inspire collaboration and spark innovative ideas for improving total health. Explore our 2024 investments below.

Housing for health

In 2024, Kaiser Permanente supported the first medical respite program in Prince George’s County, Maryland with a $200,000 grant to Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas. This grant will help lay the groundwork for the first medical respite facility in the country to provide safe spaces for people experiencing homelessness to heal from illness or injury.

Food and nutrition security

To support access to nutritious foods in the greater D.C. region, Kaiser Permanente awarded a $97,000 grant to Dreaming Out Loud, Inc. that supports families with children who are at risk for diet-related diseases. This grant directly supported more than 50 families in receiving fresh produce to help reduce their risk of diet-related diseases.

Access to care

We broadened the reach of our mobile health vehicle – a medical center on wheels that we have operated since 2010. In 2024, nearly 5,000 individuals received clinical services and health education resources through the mobile health vehicle.

The Kaiser Permanente Community Support Hub exists to connect members and the larger Kaiser Permanente community with financial resources, public benefits, and community programs to address individual social health needs. In 2024, over 5,000 referrals were provided to support social health needs.

Economic opportunity

In 2024, we expanded our summer high school clinical internship program to reach 40 students across Fairfax County, Prince George’s County, Baltimore City, and Washington, D.C. These students participated in a paid, 6-week health care workforce experience, rotating across different medical centers across the region. These students were also given mentors who guided them throughout the 5,760 hours in the facilities over the summer.
